Summary

There’s no doubt that the Apple Watch Series 6 is still the king of smartwatches, especially now with its redesigned and improved hardware. It is packed with new and updated features such as a dual-core processor based on the iPhone’s A13 Bionic chip, S6 SiP that is 20% faster, and a brighter always-on display in an impressively small design. Although you only get 18-hour battery life and we would have wished for longer battery life, the Series 6 delivers fast charging in only 1.5 hours which goes some way to compensate. Bottom line is, do we recommend it? Hell yes, it is, in our opinion, still the best smartwatch in the market.

Apple Watch Series 6 Review

Apple Watch Series 6 Review

The new Apple Watch Series 6 is now officially out, with bigger features and bolder colors. Just as any other smartwatch released in 2020, the Apple Watch Series 6 is packed with new and updated features. For the first time, Apple has incorporated an optical sensor that can measure your blood oxygen using red and infrared light. It comes with an optimized dual-core processor and an always-on display that is faster and brighter than its predecessor. Also, the upgraded version of the watchOS brings a new twist to the native sleep tracking. This can help identify a sleeping condition without official sleeping records. The fact that all these great features and improved functionality come within a reasonable price tag will make the Series 6 the most wanted and looked after smartwatch, once again.

Overview

Some of the most significant changes with the new Apple Watch Series 6 include a blood oxygen tracker, a faster and better processor, and a brighter always-on display. Thanks to the improved SpO2 monitoring sensor you can get a blood oxygen level reading in just 15 seconds. By monitoring the oxygen saturation over time, you can prevent dangerously low oxygen levels, especially for newborns or for people who are suffering from chronic respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. Apple has made the watch 2.5 times brighter than previous models and that in real life translates into a much clearer and “easy to look at” display, even on a bright sunny day.

Furthermore, Apple supports Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) tech and new wireless technology which help to locate other UWB devices with unparallel accuracy. This ensures real-time accurate location readings and the relative distance between two compatible devices. There’s also an altimeter included in the watch to determine altitude. Also, what’s interesting about Series 6 is its ability to control a whole family’s fitness and health from their Apple Watches using a single iPhone, so you can track your kids’ health without the need for iPhones for each of them.

Apple Watch Series 6 Design
Design

There are no major changes when it comes to the design of the Apple Watch Series 6 other than having new colorful casings and bands. For the first time, Apple introduces a blue and red aluminum version along with an off-grey steel titanium-like called graphite and an updated gold stainless steel finish. Apple offers new bands such as Solo Loop and Braided Solo Loop that come in a wide variety of colors to match any style. The wrist size of the Series 6 is still the same as the Apple Watch 4, which is available in 40 mm and 44 mm, while the screen size is similar to the Apple Watch 3. Also, the always-on-display OLED technology feature of Apple Watch 5 remains on Series 6, so you can check the time without pressing or touching anything. The now traditional curved edges, digital crown, and power button are all present, and as a whole, one would get excited knowing that most of the design improvements and advances take place inside, rather than outside. Why changing a design that works well, better spend the R&D time in developing things “under the hood”.

Features
S6 Chip 6th Generation

With the new Apple Watch Series 6 comes the 6th generation of the brilliant S6 chip. The chip unlocks new features and better performance overall. It is faster than the Series 5 and we are pleased to confirm that it can maintain the 18-hour battery life even with regular blood oxygen reading and always-on display. It is essentially the A13 Bionic chip for the iPhone but optimized for the Apple Watch. There is also an integrated altimeter to help you readings on altitude, should you need it. Two very cool new developments are the new U1 chip and Ultra-Wideband antennas which enable you to do some really cool things such as keyless car entry, for instance (touché!).

Apple Watch Series 6 Blood Oxygen Tracker
Blood Oxygen Tracking

The Apple Watch Series 6 offers blood oxygen (SpO2) monitoring for the first time and it is one of the features that you can now find in almost all smartwatches nowadays. The Blood Oxygen app will perform a spot check and reading while you sleep. The red light sensor tracks the color of your blood being reflected, as well as your oxygen level. You will see the data in Apple Health, which will let you know whether you have any sleeping disorders such as sleep apnea. This is particularly helpful these days with the current pandemic as Apple is studying the relationship between blood oxygen and asthma, heart diseases, and coronavirus or flu.

Sleep Tracking

Having a good night sleep has tons of great benefits for your overall health and well-being. Apple is aware of that so it takes a holistic approach in tracking your sleeping by providing you with the tools to achieve the desired amount of sleep. By detecting your micro-movements, it can create a pre-bedtime routine for you to meet your sleep goals. This is really impressive, to be honest. The Apple Watch automatically turns to Sleep Mode and darkens the screen for the whole night. And to wake you up in the morning, it produces a low and gentle haptic sound that shows the current battery level. We think this is one aspect of the phone that is going to revolutionize some people’s lives, for the better.

Apple Watch Series 6 Bands
Watch Bands

Apple has introduced a new loop with no connectors or clasps as an additional option to the now traditional sport bands, leather, and stainless steel straps. The Solo Loop and Braided Solo Loop are simple elastic bands that come in a wide range of colors and must be custom-fit. When ordering the watch you should know the measurements of your wrist to avoid any errors with the band/ loop that you order. We would recommend that you go to an apple center/ shop and try the band in-person to avoid mistakes or alternatively use a paper sizing system before purchase.

Automatic Handwashing Detection

The new Apple Watch’s automatic handwashing detection within the health app is extremely useful these days, especially with the current estate of affairs worldwide. Washing your hands properly is essential in order to keep you and others safe from viruses such as the COVID-19. By using motion sensors, microphones, and on-device machine learning, the apple watch series 6 detects your handwashing movement and sounds. When this happens, a 20-second timer automatically starts and prompts you to keep washing until the time stops. Honestly, how would have thought in developing of something like this? And it is such a cool and really useful feature. What is great about this feature is that it constantly reminds you to wash your hands when you get home. Very, very cool indeed.

Workout and Activity App

Just as the health app is essential to learn and become aware of your health and fitness levels, the Workout and Activity App is equally important to keep you on pace and on point with different workout exercises. The watchOS7 offers new workouts like Core Training, Dance, Functional Strength Training, and Cooldown. To monitor your progress, the Apple Watch Series 6 uses advanced sensor fusion which is the combination of heart rate sensors and inputs from the gyroscope and accelerometer. And there are some really funky and cool workouts or dance exercises such as cardio, hip-hop, Bollywood, and Latin. Also, the Fitness app shows a streamlined data of your daily Activities or Workouts along with the Awards and Activity Trends on one tab while the Activity Sharing and Competitions on another tab.

Watch Faces

Customization for watch faces is taken to the next level with new options for Animoji and Memoji including GMT (Time Zones), Count Up, Stripes, Chronograph Pro, and Typograph. There is a very wide range of new watch face configurations and now you don’t need to use your iPhone to do these. You can just personalize the watch faces directly within the watch itself. With a host of new watch faces, you can easily set them up to view notifications, text messages, workout metrics, and more. Options are good, more options are even better!

Battery Life

Unfortunately (or thankfully, depending on how you look at it), the battery life of the Apple Watch Series 6 remains at 18 hours. But this 18-hour life is with the blood oxygen tracker runs daily and the sleep tracker every night which is nice so you get to enjoy the full spectrum of features the apple watch series 6 has to offer, without compromises. To compensate for the battery life being the same as in series 5, Apple has reduced the charging time from 2.5 hours down to 1.5 hours. This makes charging exponentially faster and as a whole, a happier customer. It doesn’t take away the fact that the watch is still far from other smartwatches when it comes to battery life performance, but this is something you learn to live with.

Apple Watch Series 6 Activity App
Performance

We feel the Apple Watch Series 6 is not a leap forward but a small upgrade from last year’s Apple Watch 5. The only meaningful difference is the blood oxygen sensor and the altimeter, although it lacks the alerts regarding the results. Alerts could be very helpful, especially during these uncertain times, for people with respiratory problems to be notified when their blood oxygen is low. We still feel it is the best smartwatch you can buy and the integration of apps is seamless. It is a premium model smartwatch that offers an always-on display along with new colorful and attractive loop bands and all the amazing and cool features that came with the apple watch series 5.

Conclusion

There’s no doubt that the Apple Watch Series 6 is still the king of smartwatches, especially now with its redesigned and improved hardware. It is packed with new and updated features such as a dual-core processor based on the iPhone’s A13 Bionic chip, S6 SiP that is 20% faster, and a brighter always-on display in an impressively small design. Although you only get 18-hour battery life and we would have wished for longer battery life, the Series 6 delivers fast charging in only 1.5 hours which goes some way to compensate. In addition, this new Apple Watch features a U1 chip and Ultra-Wideband antennas to support short-range wireless locations like next-generation digital car keys. With its sleek design, powerful software, and easy-to-access interface, the Series 6 continues the legacy of Apple Watches.

Bottom line is, do we recommend it? Hell yes, it is, in our opinion, still the best smartwatch in the market. If the Apple Watch Series 6 is not quite what you are looking for, why not read other smartwatch reviews before making a decision or considering an alternative.
